Books have a long history, from the papyrus scrolls in ancient Greece and Rome to the eBooks of today. Perhaps the biggest development in the history of the book, at least as far as its accessibility and popularity are concerned, came with the advent of the printing press in 1440. This development allowed books to be more readily produced, and the increased availability of books increased literacy.

Books have come a long way since then. Literature has undergone a number of transformations tied to history, from Romanticism to Modernism to Postmodernism, the last category being how many literary scholars define today’s era of writing and literature. There are by now books on just about every subject, written in a plethora of different writing styles.

And thanks to current technology, one can now listen to audio books, as well as download them electronically. Books can be listened to while riding the subway or walking down the street. This technology continues to evolve and expand, as devices such as the Kindle increase in popularity.

Today there are many types of books genres from which to choose, ranging from nonfiction to self-help to literary classics. Whether the reader is looking for a little escapism, to become better informed about an event, or to be intellectually stimulated, there are books for all moods and all kinds of people.

Books are a key component of mass culture, and remain prevalent in both the household and in academia. While other modes of entertainment such as film and television have taken away some interest from the book, it is far from a dead form. In fact, with the high number of public libraries and the ability to download books to wherever you are, the book is perhaps more readily available today than it ever has been.

In other words, while some claim that the current technologically-crazed landscape has killed the book, in fact it remains a crucial part of mass media and culture. Moreover, the book has adapted to these technological advances in many ways, with portable listening devices making audio books and book downloads more popular than ever before.

The future of the book is hard to predict and full of possibilities. Many books, particularly reference books such as encyclopedias, are being replaced in favor of online versions. How sizable the shift to digital technology will be is anyone’s guess. However, whatever happens, the book has been and is an important cultural cog, and is likely to remain so for years to come.
