Audio Books

The audio book is a relatively new innovation which allows the listener to hear recordings of a text in audio format. Though the term “audio book” suggests otherwise, this can be any kind of recorded spoken word, and does not necessarily mean an audio recording of a printed book.

Audio books that are actually based on books were not popularized until the 1980s. Back then audio books were usually distributed on cassette tapes and later CDs. These CD audio books are still sold today, even as contemporary audio books are more frequently downloaded into other digital formats. The popularity of portable music players such as the iPod has made audio books more accessible for portable listening than ever before.

Audio books are commonly used in car stereos. They are also beneficial for the blind, and helpful when used alongside a printed book to help children and others learn to read.
