Books
The basic components of a book are a collection of written, printed or illustrated sheets made of paper, typically bound together to hinge at one side. Typically, books have a front and back cover. Though they are not required or seen in every book, commonly recurring pages within books include the table of contents, a page of acknowledgements, a foreword, and an appendix or index.
Through the ages, books have varied from the handmade to the mass-produced books we see today. Some of earliest writing was done on silk in China, and since that time written surfaces have evolved from papyrus to parchment to the various kinds of paper books are printed on today.
Since the invention of the printing press, the book has been one of the key resources for relaying knowledge to all classes. Books are read for pleasure and for study; for escape and for intellectual challenge.
There are many kinds of printed books, from the standard book that most people envision when they hear the word, to comic books, which include illustrations on the page, to pop-up books for children. Centuries of writers have toyed with ways of innovating how the words on the page work.
These generations of writers have left an abundance of material to read behind them, which continues to inspire the writers of today, who continue the history of literary innovation. Furthermore, with printers, copiers, and staples more available than ever before, self-made books (sometimes referred to as “zines”) are more common than ever.
However, even with this already existing, diverse selection of books, the traditional model and description of the book is changing. Today, audio books are available for the consumer, in which writing is transmitted in audio format. Though the text is the same, this format alters the experience of absorbing information.
Books can also be downloaded and listened to on the go, further shifting the experience. Where this technological bent is headed is difficult to predict, but it is clear that the book is adapting to technology, rather than being left behind by it.
There remain many ways of accessing traditional books, as well. Books can be purchased in bookstores, online, and on university campuses. They can also be checked out from public libraries for no cost.
Books remain one of the most prevalent modes of both knowledge and entertainment in our culture. It will be interesting to see what happens in the book industry as technology evolves, but the book and its influence will be around for a while.
