History Book

History is sometimes seen as a study of the humanities, and sometimes as a part of the social sciences. As a result, there are many different kinds of texts used to teach history. The standard history book used in a classroom provides a methodical approach to history, giving chapters that synopsize the important dates, people, and events. Generally, history textbooks are used primarily in classrooms, though other history genres such as historical fiction can be best sellers.

Some claim that books such as Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin are the best way to illuminate a historical time period; others prefer a history book which, chapter-by-chapter, examines the important events of the time. And others still advocate a blend of different kinds of texts.

What content should go into a given history book is a topic constantly being debated. Sometimes, “alternative” history books are made available as refutations to the canonical history textbook. These books tell history from a different perspective, or emphasize different events.
