Lord of the Flies Book
Lord of the Flies is a highly influential book that is said to be an allegory about the dark side of culture created by man. Written during the early days of the Cold War, the story of the book takes place on an isolated island after a plane crash, which left no adult survivors. The children attempt to build a survivor’s culture and society from the ground up, with disastrous results, resulting eventually in chaos and murder.
Initially the book went by more or less undetected, selling fewer than 3,000 copies during its first printing in the United States in 1955. However, by 1960 the book was a bestseller.
The book remains required reading in many schools and universities. It is commonly listed as one of the most influential books of all time, and parodies taken from the book’s premise are numerous.
