Paperback Book

“Paperback” describes a book by way of its binding. The covers of these books are made most frequently of paper or cardboard, and they are held together with glue instead of stitches or staples. As a result, paperbacks are both less durable and less expensive than hardbacks.

The decision to switch to publish a book in paperback comes when the company wants to release a book in this low cost format. Publishers must weigh the decision as to whether it will be more profitable to sell fewer, more expensive hardback books, or to sell a higher number of cheaper paperbacks.

Types of paperbacks include “mass market paperbacks” and “trade paperbacks.” Mass market paperbacks tend to be less expensive, come in the smaller, pocketbook format and are usually printed on cheaper paper. Trade paperbacks are usually printed in larger formats on paper of a higher quality.
